Carlos Sainz still has not signed a new contract for 2027. As the summer break comes to an end, the question remains whether the Madrilenian wants to extend his collaboration with Williams. After a successful debut year with the British team, the team took a big step back this season and Sainz has not gone beyond ninth place on the grid. Reportedly, he is negotiating for a contract extension of only one year for that reason.

The Spanish newspaper Marca reports that Sainz does indeed want to remain loyal to Williams, but he does not want to commit to the team long-term. The choice for a one-year contract may be driven by the lack of competitiveness within Williams. Last year, Sainz was still able to score podiums, but under the new regulations he is mostly at the back.
Carlos Sainz to Audi?
The 31-year-old Spaniard joined the team in 2025 because he strongly believed in the long-term vision. Team principal James Vowles had promised new energy for 2026, but so far the desired results have not materialized.

With a view to a future transfer, a one-year contract also offers opportunities. Since leaving Ferrari, Sainz has been linked to the new Audi team, which currently has things better organized than Williams. Father Carlos Sainz Sr., thanks to his successful rally career, also has close ties with the German factory team. Audi driver Gabriel Bortoleto recently confirmed that he will remain involved with the team ‘in the coming years,’ but F1 veteran Nico Hülkenberg could eventually leave to make room for Sainz.
