Günther Steiner is open to a return to Formula 1, but there is one role the former Haas team principal absolutely does not want. A role as FIA president is out of the question for the 61-year-old, he makes clear. In doing so, he takes a jab at the current president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem. According to Steiner, the eccentric Emirati will remain in that position ‘forever’.

Steiner has a long history in Formula 1. Between 2001 and 2003 he was executive director of Jaguar, after which he returned in 2005 as a technician at Red Bull. In 2014 he was then involved in the establishment of Haas’s F1 project, after which he remained connected to the American team as team principal until the end of 2023. After his departure from Haas, Steiner focused on other activities within motorsport, including a role in German F1 coverage. He is now also active in MotoGP as CEO and co-owner of Tech3. Due to his unforgettable contributions to the Netflix docuseries Drive To Survive, however, he is still extremely popular with the F1 audience.

Recently, Steiner has left the door slightly open for an F1 comeback, although he explicitly passes on the FIA presidency. “I think the current president will stay there forever, so I have no chance, even if I wanted to,” he joked in the Up To Speed podcast. “I’m quite happy that I won’t be the next FIA president. I think that role is not meant for me.” Steiner referred to the fact that the FIA has abolished the term limit for the position of president. As a result, Mohammed Ben Sulayem can remain longer than the previous maximum of twelve years.
