David Coulthard predicts Aston Martin breakthrough: ‘Within two years they will win races’

David Coulthard is convinced that Aston Martin will make the biggest leap forward in Formula 1 in the coming years. Despite the difficult first half of the 2026 season, the former F1 driver expects the Silverstone team to win races within two years. According to him, the first signs of recovery were already visible during the Hungarian GP, where Aston Martin launched a comprehensive upgrade package.

Expectations around Aston Martin were high before the season. With Adrian Newey, a factory collaboration with Honda, a new wind tunnel, Fernando Alonso, and the financial support of Lawrence Stroll, the team seemed ready to compete at the front. However, reality turned out differently – halfway through the season Aston Martin is tenth in the constructors’ championship, with only one world championship point.

Still, Coulthard sees enough reasons to remain optimistic. In the Up To Speed podcast, he spoke confidently about the team’s future. “Mark my words, they will be the team making the biggest progress in the next two years,” predicted the Scot. “I expect them to win Grands Prix within two years.”

Aston Martin took a first step in Hungary with a comprehensive upgrade package. Although Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll remained outside the points, the team clearly showed more speed. Stroll finished thirteenth, Alonso fourteenth. The Canadian spoke afterwards of an encouraging development. “We took a huge step this weekend. We are not yet at the front of the midfield, but we are back in the fight,” he explained. “At the same time, we know we need more power and that we must continue to improve our performance.” In that regard, Aston Martin is mainly looking at engine supplier Honda, which will introduce a revised F1 engine during the Dutch GP at Zandvoort.
