Max Verstappen will not start Sunday’s Hungarian GP in sixth place, but in fourth. The Dutchman benefits from grid penalties for both Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Antonelli. After the former was penalized shortly after qualifying, the latter also received a sanction on Saturday evening.

Antonelli finished fourth in qualifying and receives a three-place grid penalty due to an incident in which Verstappen was the cause. After the Dutchman spun on his final run in Q3, Antonelli encountered yellow flags. According to the stewards, the Italian championship leader did reduce his speed, but not enough. This became clear afterwards. Therefore, he is penalized and the Mercedes driver will start from P7.

Hamilton also received a three-place grid penalty earlier in the evening. For impeding Oscar Piastri in qualifying – something Hamilton himself hinted at immediately after the session – his new starting position is fifth instead of second. The order of the first seven drivers on the grid in Hungary, due to the race control’s decisions, is as follows: Norris, Leclerc, Piastri, Verstappen, Hamilton, Russell and Antonelli.
