Former driver Martin Brundle comes up with a number of solutions to prevent a repeat of the anticlimax at Silverstone. The British GP was shaken up in the final stages by the crash of Max Verstappen and the subsequent safety car period. The race then also ended behind that same safety car, much to the displeasure of the many fans present. Brundle suggests, among other things, looking at IndyCar: “There are possible solutions.”
For a moment at Silverstone, it seemed the drivers would get one last lap to fight for the win. But that hope quickly faded when it turned out the message about the end of the safety car was incorrect. Thus, the entire grid – with winner Charles Leclerc at the front – ultimately crossed the finish line behind the safety car.
Brundle comes up with solutions
Former driver Martin Brundle is already looking at solutions to prevent a repeat of the anticlimax at the next Grand Prix. “There are possible solutions,” said the driver for Sky F1. “In IndyCar, for example: if it’s within the last ten laps, the lapped cars – instead of a ‘wave-by’, where lapped cars are allowed to overtake the safety car – have to enter the pit lane and rejoin at the back of the field.”

“Or we could simply let the lapped cars fall behind the rest of the grid,” Brundle continues. “Or we could wave a red flag and hold a standing restart in race order, although this takes some time. Instead, we give priority to drivers who, for whatever reason, were not good enough that day, rather than to the leaders and, more importantly, the fans.”
