Hamilton and Verstappen show mutual respect after duel in Canada: ‘He is the fastest’

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen fought a heated battle for second place in the final stages of the Canadian GP. The Englishman had already passed his old rival but couldn’t pull away from the Dutchman, who kept chasing him up to the finish line. Afterwards, both drivers – once sworn rivals – were enthusiastic about the mutual fight. Hamilton spoke notably praise about Verstappen.

“It’s fantastic to overtake another world champion,” Hamilton said afterwards to the media. Second place was his best result ever representing Ferrari, although the difference was ultimately only half a second. “Do you know how consistent and fast that guy (Verstappen, ed.) is?” laughed the seven-time world champion. “He is the fastest there is. So yes, it felt great to fight with him. Besides, it was not exactly easy to overtake.”

Later, Verstappen was also asked about the duel in the official FIA press conference. “It was great, I really enjoyed it,” he said. “In the last laps, I tried to overtake him (Hamilton, ed.) once more – we both went full throttle. That was really very good.” The 41-year-old Brit again emphasized that he had also enjoyed it. “It’s always great to fight with one of the greatest racers ever,” he complimented the Dutchman.
