Mercedes brings the first major update package of the season to the Canadian Grand Prix, but team principal Toto Wolff wants to temper expectations for now. Toto Wolff emphasizes that Mercedes must respond to the steps competitors have taken in recent weeks. According to the Austrian, the series of races leading up to the summer break still offers plenty of opportunities to gain ground. “Our competitors took a step in Miami and we have to respond. With seven Grands Prix in ten weekends before the summer break, we have plenty of chances to build momentum. We are going to Canada to get back into a normal racing rhythm,” Wolff said during a preview of the weekend in Montréal.
‘Not overenthusiastic’
Mercedes had already announced before the Miami weekend that a larger update package would only be introduced during the Canadian Grand Prix. Still, Wolff does not want to draw conclusions about the new parts yet. “We are bringing our first update package of the year, but we know that performance is only performance if it is actually delivered on the track,” said Wolff.

According to Wolff, it is also too early to draw firm conclusions about the title fight. “Although we are already halfway through May, we have only completed four races. There is still a long season ahead of us and while this is an important weekend, it will not decide championships,” the team principal said. For that reason, the Austrian mainly wants to maintain calm within the team. “We stay balanced, keep learning, and try to perform as well as possible every weekend. We don’t get overenthusiastic when things go well and we don’t slump when things go wrong. That applies just as much to our drivers as to the rest of the team,” Wolff said.
