Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff examines the disappointing race weekend in Miami for George Russell. While his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli took his third consecutive win in Florida, the Brit could only manage fourth place. However, Wolff expects Russell to turn things around quickly: ‘I have always said that George was a killer’.

George Russell entered 2026 as the title favorite, but has since lost this status to his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Although the season is only four races old, the young Italian has already claimed three consecutive wins. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, however, sees the more experienced driver turning the tide.
‘George has never had it easy at the Miami circuit’
“I have always said that George wouldn’t be a Grand Prix winner if he wasn’t a killer,” Wolff tells the media present in Miami. “He analyzes what goes wrong, looks at the data, draws his conclusions, and the conclusion is that he has never had it that easy on this circuit (Miami, ed.). He has never liked the slippery surface, and that’s that. There is soon another race. He is looking forward to Montréal, and there are still eighteen races to go and many points to score.”

According to the Mercedes team boss, Russell is therefore not thinking at all about the further course of the 2026 season. “I don’t think it makes sense for him to think about what could happen at the end of the year,” Wolff concludes.
