On Sunday, the first trailer for the short film The Kaiser appeared on social media. The Bulgarian production tells the story of a young Michael Schumacher breaking through in Formula 1. The Kaiser follows the success of the Hollywood blockbuster F1: The Movie and the Netflix series Senna, about the F1 driver of the same name.

The Kaiser is a short film that tells the story of Michael Schumacher’s rise,” reads the trailer’s caption. “From his breakthrough in 1991 to the defining moments that formed a legend. The film – which was shot with a bold cinematographic approach, constantly striving for authenticity – brings one of the greatest stories in motorsport to life in an unprecedented way.” The film lasts about twenty minutes and is intended as a pilot project for a larger film about Schumacher.

Birth of a legend

Director and producer Lubo Marinov, an avid Formula 1 fan, made The Kaiser on a limited budget. For instance, the lead roles are played by relatively unknown actors. Jivko Sirakov portrays Michael Schumacher; Ayrton Senna, Eddie Jordan and Corinna Schumacher are played by Kristo Stoichkov, Dimiter D. Marinov and Viktoria Antonova, respectively. “The more I read and watched, the more curious I became about Schumacher’s early years,” Marinov said in a reaction. “I wanted to know what made him so special the moment he first stepped into an F1 car.”

“This project is not about glorifying a champion,” he explains. “It’s about the moment just before the legend was born.” Michael Schumacher made his F1 debut during the 1991 Belgian GP. At the last minute, he replaced Bertrand Gachot at Jordan. He qualified seventh but had to retire in the first lap of the race due to clutch problems. The German would finish the rest of the season at Jordan, but because he had not officially signed a contract yet, he could be snatched away by Benetton.
