The Miami GP already had a chaotic start, with a notable crash involving Pierre Gasly in just the sixth lap. It went wrong when Gasly was alongside Liam Lawson on the outside entering turn seventeen. Despite the heavy impact, Gasly remained unharmed and was able to step out of his heavily damaged car on his own. Just seconds earlier, Isack Hadjar had also crashed hard after hitting the wall and breaking his steering, causing him to shoot straight into the outer wall. The two incidents immediately caused a safety car on the street circuit.
The turbulent opening phase followed a hectic start to the race. Max Verstappen spun shortly after the lights went out, while Franco Colapinto and Lewis Hamilton touched after the Argentine slid into the side of the Mercedes.
