Verstappen on rumors of early retirement: ‘Something has to change’

Is Max Verstappen going to stop Formula 1 earlier? It is a question that was often asked in and around the paddock, after it was announced last week that regular race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase will leave for McLaren after 2027. During Viaplay’s Een Avond met Max Verstappen, the four-time world champion himself answers the question.

Rumors about an early retirement of Max Verstappen from Formula 1 circulated again after the announced departure of Gianpiero Lambiase from Red Bull. A statement from 2021 about his collaboration with the British engineer with Italian roots – “As soon as he stops, I stop too,” Verstappen said at the time to Ziggo Sport – circulated again.

During Viaplay’s Een Avond met Max Verstappen, the topic was of course also discussed. The Dutchman also briefly reflected on the current regulations in Formula 1, which he would like to see changed sooner rather than later. “The fact that we are talking (with the F1 top and FIA, ed.) is already progress. The problem is that you can adjust these regulations a bit, but fundamentally something is wrong. Not everyone will admit that publicly, but it is true.”

‘I love the real Formula 1’

“Some people are currently taking advantage (of the regulations, ed.) and trying to exploit it,” continues the four-time world champion. “But for me: I love the real Formula 1. Even if I stop in 2 or 3 years, I want future drivers to be able to enjoy it too.” However, Verstappen does not say with complete certainty that he will remain in the top class for the time being: “Something has to change (about the regulations, ed.).”
