Toto Wolff critical of duels Antonelli and Russell: ‘Were on the edge’

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has mixed feelings after the Canadian GP weekend, in which Kimi Antonelli took an impressive victory, but George Russell had to retire early due to a technical problem. The Austrian enjoyed the duel between the two Mercedes drivers, although he wants them to be a little less aggressive with each other in the future.

“Yes, a victory is of course a victory,” Toto Wolff stated upfront. “And for Kimi (Antonelli, ed.) it is great, he really deserved it.” The young Italian won his fourth Grand Prix in a row and extended his lead in the championship further. “But yes, on the other hand, there is a bittersweet feeling,” Wolff shifted the focus to Russell. “We had to disappoint George as a team; a technical problem is always hard to deal with. Of course, we would have preferred to see them fight the whole race and that it would have shown who should have won today.”

‘On the edge’

The tough battle between Antonelli and Russell was also discussed, with Wolff acknowledging that the duels were fought on the sharpest edge. “It was on the edge of acceptable,” he grinned. “Maybe they should have given ten percent less. That said, a real fight to the finish would have made us all much happier. But it is what it is.”

Finally, Wolff looked ahead to the upcoming races. After hard battles in the sprint race and the main race in Montréal, he wants to talk with his drivers. “I think tempers need to cool down first. We also want George to recover mentally here. We will discuss it internally; we always want to be transparent with our drivers.”
