Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher saw how Aston Martin made a major blunder during the winter tests in Bahrain. Due to problems with the Honda engine, the team barely covered any kilometers. Meanwhile, rumors are buzzing that Aston Martin might not be race-ready for Melbourne. Schumacher fears that the team is facing a challenging period, in which the entire project of top executive Lawrence Stroll could collapse like a house of cards.

In his Backstage Boxengasse podcast, Schumacher openly discusses the role of Lawrence Stroll and the waning competitiveness of Aston Martin. The team has already taken steps backward over the past two years, but 2026 currently threatens to culminate in a new low for the British racing stable. Despite the high-profile arrival of master designer Adrian Newey and the opening of brand-new facilities in Silverstone, Aston Martin emerged as the worst from the tests in Bahrain.
“I must admit: we have never really been enthusiastic about the whole project,” Schumacher began. “It must also be said that Lawrence Stroll has his own way of working. He hardly speaks to anyone. You see him, but he rarely gives interviews. Yet he absolutely did not deserve this.” The German questioned Stroll’s solo performance, where the ultimate responsibility rests almost entirely on the Canadian’s shoulders.

‘Enormous test of patience’
“It clearly creates a huge problem within the team,” Schumacher continued. “I think Lawrence is under enormous pressure because he acts more or less like an autocrat. I am curious to see if he can withstand the pressure from investors, because it seems he makes the decisions largely by himself.” According to Schumacher, the current problems extend beyond a lack of pure speed. The entire organization in Silverstone is said to be under high tension. “Aston Martin is currently moving sideways instead of forward. And then you get hit with such a dramatic start.”
“I can only hope that Stroll and his team, including Adrian Newey, are given time,” the six-time Grand Prix winner added. “The team must above all prevent it from collapsing like a house of cards, but patience is being tested on all sides. Reportedly, Fernando Alonso is in his final year, so he will be frustrated. And we all know how Lance Stroll reacts when things go wrong: he doesn’t stay happy. There have reportedly already been significant discussions,” Schumacher said, referring to alleged tensions between Stroll and his engineers. “And of course, Adrian Newey is disappointed. He undoubtedly imagined this project to be more rosy.”
