Sergio Pérez was halfway through the Canadian Grand Prix on his way to the pit lane when suddenly the right front suspension of his Cadillac failed. The Mexican was shocked because there was no immediate cause for the suspension collapse. ‘We still need to investigate and hopefully address it soon,’ said the Mexican.

Sergio Pérez entered the pit lane on lap 39 when at that moment the right front suspension of his Cadillac failed. The Mexican was shocked and left a trail of debris at the entrance of the pit lane. Pérez’s race was immediately over. The damage to the car came out of nowhere: for example, the Cadillac driver had not hit the wall or driven aggressively over the kerbstones prior to the moment.
Pérez made it clear immediately after the race that Cadillac must quickly find the exact cause. “It’s something we need to understand and get under control because what is happening and has happened is far from ideal,” he told the media present in Montreal. “It’s something we need to investigate and hopefully address soon. I think operationally we are still falling short and not making the progress we are making in terms of performance. We need to enable ourselves to maximize the car’s performance at this moment.”

Wrong tire strategy
The problems with the right front suspension were not the only thing that spoiled things for Pérez in Montreal. Like McLaren, Cadillac gambled on intermediate tires at the start with the wrong strategy. The predicted rain over Montreal did not materialize. “At the start, I already felt it was raining a little less, but it quickly became clear that we had gambled on the wrong tires,” explained the Cadillac driver. “Within three laps, the tires were completely worn out, and that was the biggest problem. But we also had a good pace later on.”
