Karun Chandhok criticizes Aston Martin: 'This is embarrassing'

Former Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok has criticized Aston Martin’s opening phase. According to him, the situation is even “embarrassing” due to the large gap to the competition. The British racing team already experienced major problems in the first races of the season, preventing them from competing competitively. “They have bigger problems than just the team principal,” said Chandhok.

Karun Chandhok emphasizes that Aston Martin has bigger problems than the team principal role. For example, the team is struggling with reliability issues and severe vibrations. The future of team principal Adrian Newey caused speculation, and rumors emerged about Jonathan Wheatley unexpectedly leaving as team principal at Audi. “There were certainly rumors circulating between China and Japan about Aston Martin. It seemed logical that Wheatley would go that way because Adrian temporarily filled that role,” Chandhok said on the Sky Sports podcast.

“It’s not even disappointing”

According to the Indian, it is not yet definite whether the former Audi team principal will return to Formula 1. “If it was finalized, it would have already been announced. There is still much speculation about where Jonathan will end up. What I do know for sure is that we haven’t seen the last of him in the paddock. He has been around since the early nineties. He is not yet done with Formula 1. The question is whether he will get another top-level position, given his recent experience as team principal,” Chandhok stated.

However, these are not the biggest problems Aston Martin is facing, according to Chandhok. “They have bigger problems than the team principal. It’s actually not even disappointing anymore, it’s embarrassing how far behind they are with the car. Especially due to the problems on Honda’s side,” the Indian emphasized. According to him, the priority clearly lies with the technology. “They need someone to solve the technical problems. I don’t necessarily think Jonathan is the right person for that. They need people who can improve the situation at Honda.”
