FIA responds to Middle East war, prioritizes safety in F1 championship

The FIA is closely monitoring the situation in the Middle East. Following the outbreak of war between Iran, the United States, and Israel, many questions remain regarding the logistics of the upcoming Formula 1 championship and the planned races in the Gulf States. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem prioritizes the safety of everyone involved but cannot yet comment on any potential calendar changes.

“As President of the FIA, my thoughts go out to everyone affected by the recent events in the Middle East,” Ben Sulayem wrote on social media on Monday. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and stand with the affected families and communities. In this uncertain time, we hope for peace, safety, and a speedy recovery. Dialogue and the protection of civilians must be the priority.”

Safety first

He reiterated an earlier statement from Formula 1, which emphasized that the situation – with a view to the upcoming races in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain – is being closely monitored. “We are in close contact with our member clubs, organizers, teams, and colleagues on the ground and are following developments closely,” said Sulayem. “Safety and well-being will guide our decisions regarding the upcoming events in both the WEC and Formula 1 championships. Unity within our organization is now more important than ever.”

No mention was made of the upcoming Grands Prix in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, despite both countries becoming involved in the conflict. In the past, Formula 1 has faced criticism because a missile attack took place near the Jeddah Corniche Circuit during a free practice session in Saudi Arabia. Fans felt it was irresponsible that the premier class paid no attention to this.
