Ferrari tests next version of 'macarena' wing during filming day at Monza

Ferrari is far from done with their striking ‘macarena’ wing. The rear wing, which can open even further than regular rear wings due to a rotating effect, has already caused a stir in the paddock multiple times, but has not yet been mounted on the SF-26 during a Grand Prix. Ferrari hopes to test the wing more extensively during a filming day at Monza, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel.

A filming day is scheduled for Ferrari on Wednesday. The Scuderia has traveled to Monza for this, the home of the Italian Grand Prix. Ferrari has rented the ‘Temple of Speed’ to test aerodynamic upgrades, including the much-discussed ‘macarena’ wing. According to the Italian Automoto, the Scuderia hopes to keep their filming day at Monza private, as upgrades for the Miami GP are also being tested.

‘Macarena’ wing

The idea behind Ferrari’s rotating ‘macarena’ wing is to push the boundaries of how far the rear wing can open. On the straight sections of a circuit, the spoiler flap rotates 180 degrees, causing the wing to open. This reduces drag and should theoretically result in higher top speeds. Ferrari owes the nickname ‘macarena’ wing to the rotating effect that comes with the new rear wing.

The special rear wing was first spotted during winter testing in Bahrain. Ferrari was again in the spotlight with the concept during the first free practice session of the Chinese GP. However, the team removed the rear wing again for the rest of the Chinese race weekend. The wing would cause balance problems for the car, and Ferrari did not have time to solve these during the rest of the weekend in Shanghai. In addition, the Scuderia must also ensure that the ‘macarena’ wing can close within four hundredths of a second, to prevent the FIA from deeming the wing illegal.
