Fernando Alonso has once again clearly distanced himself from persistent speculation about a possible impending retirement. The 44‑year-old Aston Martin driver emphasizes that he still feels competitive and motivated in Formula 1 and that he has not yet received any signal that it is time to stop.

The two-time world champion spoke out during a visit to the historic paddock of the Monaco Grand Prix. He was confronted with questions about his future, especially given Aston Martin’s difficult start to the 2026 season. However, Alonso was not deterred. “I love what I do, I love racing,” he stated. “My first race was when I was three years old and now I am 44. Forty-one years of my life I have been behind a wheel.”
‘I feel happy’
Although the results this season have been disappointing so far, partly due to performance issues and a difficult Honda power unit package, Alonso does not want his career to be defined by his team’s current struggles. “Racing is not just a career, but a life full of passion for speed,” said Alonso, almost philosophically.

The prospect of saying goodbye to the sport is difficult for him. “The moment I have to stop will be a very difficult decision and also hard to accept. At the moment, I don’t feel that the time has come to stop. I feel competitive, I feel motivated, and I feel happy when I drive. So hopefully this is not my last season.”
