Dutch Formula 1 DJ misses opening races: ‘Not responsible’

Rick Jansen has been combining his work as an economics teacher with side jobs in Formula 1 for years. As DJ Admin, he provides the atmosphere and turns many a Grand Prix into a party. During the opening races of the upcoming season, however, the king class’s house DJ will not be present. Due to the war that has broken out in the Middle East, he finds it ‘not responsible’ to continue his performances.

“It is terrible what is happening in the world,” Jansen writes on his Facebook page. “That is the great suffering. The small suffering affects me personally.” The Roermond native has canceled his Formula 1 shows in Australia, China, and Japan due to the war in the Middle East. They are safe destinations in themselves, but according to Jansen, it is not responsible to continue his DJ jobs under the current circumstances. “Qatar Airways is the main sponsor of Formula 1, so we always fly via Doha,” he clarified to the Limburg broadcaster L1 Nieuws.

“Other airlines naturally fly to those destinations as well, but they don’t offer favorable departure times; then I wouldn’t be able to combine it with my work at school,” he explained. As an economics teacher, Jansen is also a mentor for a graduating class. “If I’m in Bahrain, I can still find a way to get home. But if I’m in Australia, China, or Japan, it could just happen that I don’t get home. As a mentor of a graduating class, we are now in the final phase and I have to be there for them.”
