Max Verstappen was understandably not happy with the retirement during the Chinese Grand Prix, but it fit into what he called a “very bad weekend.” The Dutchman could not make an impact in the race in Shanghai: “The speed was terrible, the balance too.”

Verstappen, who had to park his Red Bull car in the pits with a cooling problem during the race, already had problems at the start. “No power. Just like Saturday in the sprint race,” he looked back on the start where he fell back to the penultimate position. “As soon as I release the clutch, the engine doesn’t respond and nothing happens.”
He continued: “The rest of the race was also more or less the same as yesterday. I couldn’t push, it was terrible. And a bad weekend for us then.”

It wasn’t surprising. “I’m not surprised that we don’t get close to Mercedes or Ferrari. But I do hope that we can become more competitive in the near future. We are not where we want to be, but everyone in the team is really doing their best. There are just many things we need to improve.”
