Danish investors show plans for new F1 circuit, dream of own Grand Prix

Plans are underway in Denmark to build a brand new race circuit. Danish investors presented the first concept images of the Circuit of Denmark this week, a large-scale complex in the south of the country. The track design comes from the design agency of former F1 driver Alexander Wurz. In the long term, the circuit must obtain the required Grade 1 license so that a Formula 1 Grand Prix can also be organized.

Investors Henrik Lyngbye Pedersen and his son Mathias Lyngbye Villadsen presented their ambitious plans for the new Danish circuit this week. With an investment of 3.8 billion kroner – equivalent to over half a billion euros – a complex is to be built that can host a Danish GP in the future. The track is to be built on the current site of Padborg Park, a modest race circuit near the German border. The initiators also hope to tap into the German and Dutch markets. From the Netherlands, the travel time to the current circuit is about five hours.

F1 ambitions

Wurz Design, the agency of former F1 driver Alex Wurz, which is also responsible for the spectacular Qiddiya circuit in Saudi Arabia, has already revealed several concept images of the Circuit of Denmark. The proposed design is over six kilometers long, has eighteen corners, and must accommodate as many as one hundred thousand spectators. Rebecca Palmberg Steele, who is active as a representative of women’s football at FC Copenhagen, leads the project.

“The circuit is being built at a location that serves as a gateway to Europe,” she told the Danish business magazine Børsen. “This project can give an important boost to both business and the local community.” In the long term, the Circuit of Denmark must also be able to welcome Formula 1. However, a Grade 1 license from the FIA is required for this. Denmark has never before been a host country for the premier class; of all Scandinavian countries, only Sweden organized six Grands Prix between 1973 and 1978, at the Scandinavian Raceway in Anderstorp.
