Christian Horner downplays rumors about Alpine: ‘I am still on leave, I have no hurry’

Christian Horner does not rule out a return to Formula 1, but for now tempers the rumors about a move to Alpine. The former Red Bull team principal, who left the team in mid-2025, is currently enjoying a so-called gardening leave and emphasizes that he is not being rushed by speculation about his future.

The Brit spoke out this weekend to Sky Sport MotoGP, where he was present as a guest at the sprint race in Jerez. He was confronted with persistent stories about a possible role at Alpine. “Me at Alpine? There’s always a lot of guesswork,” said Horner. “For now, I’m still on a break and I’m not in a hurry. When that period is over, we’ll see.”

‘Away from Formula 1 for a while’

Horner is considered one of the most influential team leaders in recent Formula 1 history. His gardening leave is expected to end in the summer, which theoretically gives him the opportunity to rejoin an F1 team. Alpine is said to be interested, although there is no formal confirmation. Rumors also suggest that Horner would aspire to an equity stake in Otro Capital, an investment vehicle also followed by parties such as Mercedes and the owner of the New York Mets.

For now, however, Horner keeps his distance. “At the moment, I’m just enjoying myself,” he said in Jerez. “I enjoy following other sports and being away from Formula 1 for a while.”

‘Márquez is the Verstappen of MotoGP’

Horner’s presence at MotoGP was no coincidence. He was invited by MotoGP and Liberty Media and took the opportunity to immerse himself in a championship he has long had sympathy for. “I am here as a guest of MotoGP and Liberty Media,” he explained. “I’ve had time to watch other races. I’ve always been a fan of this championship, so being here is fantastic.”

Horner also showed his admiration for the riders on two wheels. With a striking comparison, he expressed his appreciation for one of the sport’s big names. “I am a fan of Marc Márquez,” said Horner. “He is the Max Verstappen of MotoGP.”
