George Russell ‘speechless’ after painful retirement: ‘Something is working against us’

George Russell reacted strongly after his retirement in the Canadian GP to the course of his race and the recent series of setbacks in the championship. The Mercedes driver – also polesitter in Montreal – retired in the thirtieth lap after a thrilling duel with teammate Kimi Antonelli. He had enjoyed the fight with the Italian, but had to watch helplessly as Antonelli inherited the victory and pulled the title fight further towards himself.

“What do I feel now? Disbelief,” said a disillusioned Russell after the race. “It feels like someone doesn’t want me to fight or compete for this championship,” he laughed weakly. “It’s been the same story in the last three Grands Prix. There is just something that really works against us. I’m a bit speechless. I did enjoy the fight with Antonelli,” he responded when asked. “Honestly, I’m happy with how I handled it. I’m just satisfied with the weekend regarding my personal performance.”

Russell emphasized that despite the disappointment, he remains confident in his own abilities, although the retirement weighs heavily. “After Miami, many people doubted me, there was a lot of talk,” he continued. “But I know what I can do: win the sprint, put the car on pole position, lead the race, fight hard. I really enjoyed that battle,” he said again. “I would have liked to have kept that up for another thirty laps.”
