VIDEO: Kimi Antonelli wins again, takes prestigious Bandini Trophy

Kimi Antonelli once again won a prize this weekend – after winning the last four Grands Prix in a row: the Italian was awarded the Lorenzo Bandini trophy. This prestigious award is usually given to Formula 1 drivers, not only for their performance on the track but also for their attitude off the track. Among others, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton preceded Antonelli; they won the trophy in 2016 and 2009 respectively.

The award ceremony takes place annually in Brisighella, in the heart of the Italian region Emilia-Romagna. For the occasion, Antonelli made a small road trip through the rolling landscape in his father’s Mercedes-AMG GT3. The festivities began in Imola, after which he drove to a crowd of fans at Piazza del Popolo in Faenza. Then the 19-year-old driver headed towards Brisighella, the birthplace of Lorenzo Bandini, where he received the 33rd Trofeo Bandini at Piazza Marconi.

‘Huge honor’

“It is a huge honor to be part of this event and to receive such a special award,” Antonelli responded on stage. “Being here today, surrounded by so much support and positivity, makes this moment even more special. This is an experience I will never forget and I am incredibly grateful to share this with all of you. I want to dedicate this trophy to my family, my fantastic team, and everyone who has supported me during this journey. Your encouragement and trust have made the difference, and I am very thankful for that.”

A jury of twelve motorsport journalists and former Formula 1 team members decides who receives the Lorenzo Bandini trophy. The award is usually given to drivers who demonstrate a strong personality, a professional attitude, and exceptional racing qualities. The trophy is, of course, named after Formula 1 driver Lorenzo Bandini. The Italian raced a total of 42 Grands Prix between 1962 and 1967. He won one race and finished on the podium eight times. In 1967, he died as a result of a severe crash during the Monaco GP.
