The top qualification on the Nordschleife Nürburgring has also been completed, making the starting grid for the NLS5 race known. Not Max Verstappen but his protégé Thierry Vermeulen took the coveted pole position. Verstappen’s teammate Lucas Auer drove the fifth fastest time, meaning the world champion will start the race from fifth place this afternoon.

After the qualifying session, where Max Verstappen had to settle for 32nd place, it was time for the top qualification. Teams are then allowed to drive their fast laps one by one. Verstappen’s teammate Lucas Auer got behind the wheel of the #3 Mercedes, while it slowly started to rain on ‘the Green Hell’. During his first fast lap, Auer only managed an 8:25.385, good for seventeenth place. However, the driver improved to an 8:13.351. The time proved good enough for fifth on the grid.

Pole for Vermeulen
Pole position, however, went to Thierry Vermeulen – Verstappen’s protégé and son of manager Raymond Vermeulen. The young driver set the fastest time of the session with an 8:10.275. Vermeulen was a thousandth faster than second-placed David Jahn. The NLS5 race starts at 13:00 on Sunday afternoon.
