Red Bull hopes to turn the tide with Miami upgrades, RB22 weight loss 'is central'

Red Bull is having a difficult start to the 2026 season, but hopes to turn the tide after the unexpected spring break. The team, like almost every team on the grid, is bringing upgrades to Miami. According to multiple sources, weight loss for the RB22 is ‘central’ to this.

The start of the season has been difficult for Red Bull so far. The Austrian racing team even has to tolerate Haas ahead of them in the constructors’ championship, while top teams Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren are slowly disappearing from sight. Red Bull hopes to turn the tide by bringing the first upgrades to the Miami GP.

Like the other racing teams, Red Bull also unexpectedly had a five-week break – due to the canceled Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix – to work longer on upgrades for the RB22. However, the Austrians will not be the only team bringing upgrades to the American race.

RB22 Weight Loss

According to RN365, reducing the weight of the RB22 is ‘central’ to the planned upgrades. The Red Bull car is said to be ‘nine to ten kilograms’ too heavy. It is expected that parts will be introduced in Miami that look identical but will be lighter. Red Bull hopes that the upgrades will not only result in a lighter car but also improve energy management.

F1-Insider previously reported that the RB22 had ten kilograms of overweight in Melbourne, which results in a time loss of almost three-tenths of a second per lap. Drastic changes to the Red Bull car will remain unfeasible within the current timeframe, which is why the team will likely focus primarily on aerodynamic refinements and better coordination between driving dynamics and downforce generation.
