Pérez surprised by Alonso's disappointing performances: ‘Hoped he would be fighting at the top’

Sergio Pérez is disappointed by the disappointing performance of Aston Martin. Because Adrian Newey is in charge of the British team for the first time this season, the Mexican – who worked with the top designer at Red Bull – did not expect Aston Martin to be fighting at the back with Cadillac. ‘I hoped that Fernando would be fighting for the top positions,’ says Pérez, who appreciates the battles with the Spaniard.

Sergio Pérez drove for Red Bull for years before his time as a Cadillac driver. The Mexican worked with top designer Adrian Newey at the Austrian team; the brain behind, among others, the dominant RB19. In this Red Bull car, drivers Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez won 21 of the 22 Grands Prix in 2023, although the Mexican was only responsible for two of these victories.

Since then, Newey swapped Red Bull for Aston Martin, and Pérez started working at Cadillac after his dismissal from the Austrians. However, after three Grands Prix, both teams occupy the last places in the constructors’ championship; a position that Pérez had not expected at all for the British team. “The truth is that I never expected this. I hoped that Fernando (Alonso, ed.) would be fighting for the top positions,” the Cadillac driver tells DAZN.

Battle with Alonso

“I really had confidence in the project with Adrian Newey, with whom I worked at Red Bull and also at Honda,” he adds. “These are the surprises that Formula 1 presents to you.” For Pérez himself, there is a small advantage to the poor performance of Aston Martin in 2026 so far, he honestly admits. “Moreover, if we fight with Fernando race after race, at least we won’t be bored and we’ll even have a good time,” he concludes.
