The popularity of Formula 1 has reached new heights in recent years. The sport’s reach is greater than ever; countries are now lining up to organize their own Grand Prix. Moreover, due to the – whether or not controversial – new regulations, more and more car manufacturers are being drawn to the sport. Reportedly, the Chinese BYD, the electric car giant, is also exploring the possibilities of getting its own team on the grid.

The new regulations focus on further electrification; by 2026, a Formula 1 car will be half-powered by a battery. This led to the entry of Cadillac and Audi, as well as the return of Honda. Audi bought its way in via Sauber, while Cadillac founded a completely new F1 team. On paper, there is still room for a twelfth racing team. Last year, there were already rumors about a new Saudi team, but now BYD is also said to have shown interest.
BYD to Formula 1?
The American Bloomberg reports that the Chinese company is investigating the possibilities of entering motorsport. BYD is said to have several classes in mind, including the WEC and Formula 1. This reporting is striking to say the least. It is clear that BYD is the market leader in the production of electric cars, while in both racing classes, internal combustion engines are primarily used.

Still, Formula 1 would welcome BYD with open arms, that much is clear. The premier class has been growing strongly in the Asian market in recent years, including in China. The Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai returned to the calendar in 2024 and has grown into a wildly popular event. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem previously stated that the arrival of a Chinese racing team would be a logical next step after the entry of Cadillac.
