Formula 1 has put an end to recent speculation about a return of the Indian GP in 2027. The reason was a firm statement from the Indian sports minister, who spoke convincingly this week about a return to the calendar. However, a different sound is coming from FOM. India was last on the calendar in 2013, when Sebastian Vettel secured his fourth world title at the Buddh International Circuit.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is counting on a Formula 1 comeback in India. On Monday, he told the media: “There will be an F1 race in India in 2027. This is 100 percent certain to happen. The first race will take place at the Buddh International Circuit.” However, FOM immediately contradicted those claims. “While India is a valuable market for the further growth of Formula 1, with a fantastic and passionate fanbase, we will not be racing there in 2027,” a spokesperson said.
Safe location
This seems to rule out a return in the short term, despite the fact that India is still seen as a promising destination due to its large car market and growing fan base. However, optimism remains from the Indian government, partly due to geopolitical developments and possible financial incentives. “Given the global situation as a result of ongoing tensions with Iran, India is seen as a safe location for sporting events, including Formula 1,” Mandaviya explained. “The role of the government is to provide the infrastructure and to address tax-related issues.”

The Indian GP disappeared from the F1 calendar after 2013 due to high financial losses for the organizers, combined with serious bureaucratic and tax-related disputes with the government. One of the reasons was that the state considered the premier class as ‘entertainment’ instead of a sport.
