Bernie Ecclestone fears loss of fans due to new rules: ‘Hope I’m wrong’

Bernie Ecclestone shares Max Verstappen’s concerns about the new Formula 1 cars. The former F1 boss even fears a reduction in fans due to the application of the new rules during races, particularly the electrical part of the cars. “Maybe the fans will like it, but I don’t think so. The danger is that we are going to lose fans. I really hope I’m wrong,” he says.

The statement from former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone followed shortly after Verstappen’s criticism in Bahrain, in which the Dutchman described the cars as ‘Formula E on steroids.’ Current F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali does not share these concerns, but the 95-year-old Brit is less convinced. He thinks there will be confusion at the start of the season. According to him, the new regulations require a different perspective on the sport. “Everyone has to learn Formula 1 all over again,” Ecclestone told RTL/ntv and sport.de.

‘The DNA of Formula 1’

Ecclestone is particularly concerned about the course of the premier class and what the application of the new regulations will mean for the fans. “It’s less about racing, but it’s developing into: more rules, more regulations for the drivers, don’t do this, don’t do that,” the Brit concludes. The DNA of the sport is being adjusted, shifting the focus more towards development. “The DNA of Formula 1 is that it is a world championship for drivers and not for engineers. However, from now on, the sport is competing more with Formula E. Maybe the fans will like that, but I don’t think so. The danger is that we are going to lose fans, I hope I’m really wrong.”

‘Looking for the best chef’

Not only Ecclestone and Verstappen have criticisms. From several sides in the paddock, the start in Australia is being awaited with suspense. After the tests in Bahrain, it appeared that the engine’s battery drains quickly and that overtaking on the straights with less power is difficult. As a result, there seems to be little confidence yet. Ecclestone emphasizes that the new way of racing will be a completely new chapter in Formula 1. The Brit does hope for a few positive points in the championship this year. However, he doesn’t see that happening at Aston Martin. “Apparently we are going to look for the best chef. We will keep our eyes open,” Ecclestone concludes after a statement by Fernando Alonso about the new cars.

According to Ecclestone, the rules would not be in Verstappen’s favor. Most opinions circulating emphasize that the four-time world champion actually has an advantage because he can easily adapt to more difficult rules. “The rules certainly do not work in favor of Max Verstappen and his driving style,” Ecclestone refers to the aggressive, attacking driving style of the Dutch driver.
