Stefano Domenicali supports V8 comeback in Formula 1: ‘Back to the essence’

F1-CEO Stefano Domenicali has expressed his support for the return of the V8 engine. In Miami, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem already announced that the sport could switch to eight-cylinder engines in the next regulation cycle. Good news for F1 fans, but nothing is definitive yet. However, Domenicali assures that he wants to return to ‘the essence of motorsport’ in the future, where the naturally aspirated V8 plays an important role.

“They are coming back,” said Ben Sulayem in Miami about the big engines of the past. “Ultimately, it’s just a matter of time. In 2031, the FIA will have the authority to do this without the engine manufacturers needing to vote on it. That is the regulation. But we want to introduce it a year earlier, something everyone outside the organization is now asking for.” Meanwhile, he is receiving support from Domenicali, who states that he has always advocated racing with V8 engines.

In an interview with L’Équipe, Domenicali was asked if he supports Ben Sulayem’s proposal. “1000%, I have always said that,” he replied immediately. “I fully support the vision of the FIA President. With sustainable fuel, lighter cars, and V8 engines, we go back to the pure essence of motorsport. That is what I have always wanted.” The current regulations have faced strong criticism in recent months, partly due to the increased level of electrification. Domenicali defended that step by stating that he acted according to the wishes of the teams.

Current formula is a compromise

“Some people – I would say, very few people – complain about the rules,” the Italian continued. “But we must not forget that these changes were necessary; otherwise, the manufacturers would no longer supply engines to the teams. That was their wish, that is a fact. And since we did not want to go fully electric, a compromise was found to continue attracting new manufacturers.”

Several team bosses and manufacturers have now indicated they are open to a return to V8 engines. These were last used in 2013, before the start of the hybrid era. So they could return within a few years. The advantages are clear: fans and drivers get a piece of the old Formula 1 experience back, and according to experts, a V8 power unit is simpler and possibly cheaper to produce than the current hybrid powertrain. Combined with sustainable fuels, it could also be used in a climate-neutral way.
